Summertime,
summertime. Not calendar official yet but summer none the less. Keep those dogs
and cats cool and give them plenty of water. Remember that the inside of cars
and trucks as well as the beds on pickup trucks get extremely hot - quickly.
Don't leave your pets unattended in situations that can cause heat stroke.
Finally rain has come to our county. With rain comes mosquitoes and with
mosquitoes come heartworms. We have had several dogs treated for heartworms this
year already and sadly we lost one during treatment. He was a very sweet dog and
we were all devastated. We named him Orion so we know he will have a place
forever in the night sky. We also had to have a wonderful dog euthanized because
of damage already done to her heart by the worms. PLEASE PUT YOUR DOGS ON
HEARTWORM PREVENTATIVE AND KEEP THEM ON IT!! In South Texas, ALL YEAR LONG!
Our foster homes are still overcrowded with dogs. There are still many pets we
cannot take in because of lack of space. Our foster parents stay in a state of
exhaustion but keep going for the love of animals.
Many, many positive things have come to pass for Goliad Pet Adoption and the
residents of Goliad County this year .......
The excitement for the first part of the year is our status as a Petsmart
charity and our ability to have another adoption outlet. The new Petsmart in
Victoria has been a savior for Goliad cats. In just a few months we have had
more cats adopted there than all of last year! Thank you Petsmart!!!!!!!!!!
Our free spay/neuter program is still going strong. Thanks to many generous
individuals and local organizations as well as a grant from Petco. We also had a
very successful private fundraiser. We cannot give enough kudos to that family
for their support as well as that of those who bid on auction items. Other
community support has come from The Girls Scouts/Brownies and The National
Junior Honor Society. As always thanks to Bexar County Humane Society/SPCA and
the Austin Humane Society for being there when we need them.
A committee has finally met and an initial request at the County Commissioners
Court has been made for a joint City/County animal shelter project. There is
much work ahead on this project but the first step has been taken. As we all
know, "every journey begins with a single step".
We try to keep a positive attitude and do see improvements. Hoping to see many
more. We could certainly use more volunteers to help meet our goals.
